new andres 12inch debut on his own label la vida. andres is one that really needs no introduction, but for those unfamiliar here it is: andres, aka dj dez, is one of detroits unsung heros of underground music. since the late 90s andres has built up an extremely respectable catalog of that blurs the boundaries between genres, most notably his records on kdj and mahogani music. not to forget, dj dez is also slum villages dj, has recorded many hip hop instrumental on hipnotech records, and his hand is on countless other detroit records. definitely one of the most consistent producers we�ve got here whose music can be summed up in one word: quality!

cpu and dance musics polymath neil landstrumm share a love for classic bleep techno, hence landstrumm has brought to the table four superb reminders of the criminally short lived genre. with spine tingling melodies reminiscent of 808 state s best work, and sub-bass worthy of lfo s bass-bin shaking reputation. a death, a mexican and a mormon perfectly encapsulates not only landstrumms influences but also his deep seated love for bleep. a labour of love which the sheffield based imprint has been only all too happy to encourage and hopes will keep the genre alive for generations to come.

i made music together with lee for years (alongside mick rolfe) as last waltz. he also worked as lizards with james hadfield (james released solo for me me me 02), oli worriner, is a talented young northerner who�s already making a great name for his solo output, both under his own name and his traela alias, as well his label �tunnyl recordings�.
i�m really flattered that they�ve let me release their first full solo release, and i love how they�ve brought out each others deeper and more emotive sides in these 2 tracks. shit robot is a hero of mine. i basically wore out the grooves on a bunch of his dfa stuff from just over 10 years ago, and i�ve avidly bought everything he�s released since. i met him this summer for the first time when we shared the bill at a festival, and was so happy to find that he�s also lovely guy in real life. they say you should never meet your heroes, but i don�t subscribe to that as this meeting led to not one, but two fantastic remixes for me me me 08. the originals are a bright mix of melodically analogue left leaning house, while the remixes zero-in on a punchier dancefloor vibe, with an epic version goodnight, as well a more heads down disco dub.

needs is a new label that bills itself as a not-for profit concern, which may apply to many record labels, but this one in particular calls upon a strong cast of deep house producers to impart the kind of smallville-friendly sounds that discerning heads should snap up in a heartbeat. hubie davisons i know is a melancholic affair with heart nagging strings, while johannes albert injects a little spice into proceedings with a choice breakbeat and some excellent bird song on vigilia. dj swaggers 21st century slow jam is a peppy little shuffler with warm acidic bass and a kick ass swing in the beat, and then bobby pleasure finishes the record off with the wistful but tech-edged cloudspotting.

for ws021 we head to italy where we find a duo by the name of concret aka italo-mexican musician diego angelico escobar and producer q-pha. together, they submit a couple of ethereal, stripped-back and driving techno tracks that compliment each other so well they appear to be brother and sister from the same session. on remix duty we ve got another italian, rodion, who ads his signature sound to ritorno and flips it into a laid-back dark groover. last but not least is uk s heretic, aka timothy clerkin, who remixes andata into a classy acid burner fit for a massive warehouse party or dark, sweaty basement.

you may know aretha franklins scintillating one step ahead from its vital role in the oscar-winning movie moonlight. you may also know it as providing the beautifully melancholic backdrop for mos defs 1999 hit ms fat booty. the inaugural be with 7inch is a special one indeed, containing the first ever officially licensed reissue of arethas all-time deep soul classic. one step ahead was not included on any of her columbia studio albums, and remains one of her rarest releases. on the flip, i cant wait until i see my babys face is a thrilling, goosebump-inducing killer and an unfairly slept-on rendition of this eternal track. the single comes housed in a custom printed full-colour company sleeve and is limited to just 1000 copies

recorded on september 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with john coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed pharoahs first) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist. (yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist birth name ferrell only later changed the spelling from the standard pharaoh to the more personalized pharoah.) with one foot in mainstream jazz � pianist jane getz had played with charles mingus and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of sanders� style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on impulse. interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of vant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception. esp-disk has issued this album under three different covers, for its 21st-century reissue on vinyl, we have chosen to use the second and most beautiful. it is augmented with liner notes by a current esp-disk� artist, tenor saxophonist ras moshe burnett of the red microphone, who can be heard accompanying amina baraka on their eponymous 2017 release.

nice price deal !!! indigenous electronic s is a recently launched vinyl only label, seeking to showcase a combination of both known and undiscovered talent. the label s first release is a 4 track ep, by siamak amidi, the creative director of analog room in dubai, as well as a producer, dj and volt music label boss. the ep showcases amidi s experience with the confluence of both analog and digital synthesis. the a side presenting newer material with the b side some of his older unreleased works. -unconditional love- a stripped down affair, deep, dynamic and ethereal without ever losing the focus on the groove with it s tight production. -retro floor vison aspect- takes us further into trippier post 5am territory, also stripped yet with enough going on to keep the senses tantalized, the standout hook to the bassline, swirling micro electronics with a variated jacking high hat, tried and tested. siamak s -tool- is a deep techy driving affair, with light haunting pads above and throughout track with original use of effects on the high end percussion. -you think you know it- is a rolling percussive track that comfortably rides the boundary between house and techno, with well defined low end and sweeping synth pads that once again show s amidi s abilities in the mix down to not swamp the track or dilute the groove. an ep for the dj s dj.

�never change a winnig team�. that s what radio citizen s niko schabel must have thought when he decided to release his fourth album once again on sonar kollektiv. after the success of �the night & the city� (sk310lp / cd) from 2015 and the productive collaboration ever since this seems like a wise resolution. schabel s idea to retrieve to a mountain cabin in salvenberg, tirol with his band and tons of equipment turned out to be an even more crucial factor to the cause. here they could create and record new songs and bring them together neatly for the new album. the 13 tracks assembled here on �silent guide� are � each on its own and in its entirety anyway � best proof how wonderfully this approach has worked out.

with its sixth release new york trax continues the mission of highlighting the jewels of the new york underground. liquid asset is a philadelphia-born brooklyn-based hardware virtuoso who has made a name for herself by virtue of appearances on labels such as e-saggila s summer isle brooklyn s own primitive languages jacktone and acid etch where she has recently delivered a furious 7- split with isabella. liquid asset built her own 808 and 303 clones by hand. the modified 303 is particularly audible in the opening track of the record -ephemeral nights- where she did not waste time on an intro and went straight to creating a sonic pandemonium by blending an airhorn sound with frenzy acid basslines and a hardcore-leaning 909 kick. -contact- is a merciless creature of the night with its relentless dark groove building up throughout this composition cannot easily be classified as a representation of any particular genre. -controlperception- opens the b side. here liquid asset plays with a cheerful acid line over a dreamy landscape often punctured with bleeping sounds. finally in -forgetmenot- two opposite sounding basslines intertwine creating a minimal yet very capturing composition to close this one of a kind record.

if you are wondering what the artist wanted to tell you by choosing this title, we will give you a small hint: it�s a cynical statement on something that for sure every party promoter has experienced at some point. the rest, we will leave up to your imagination� in real life, there�s no mercy � neither is when it comes to the sound of this new snork release by syntax error. the four new tracks with meaningful names are not only a social criticism and another artistic processing of the current development of the techno scene, but also a classic syntax error: rough, tricky and good to groove. each track stands on its own, telling another story. �collateral cosmopolitan� is a straight forward piece with a highly memorable beat talking about the uniformity that is creeping in the waiting lines of more and more techno clubs. �i wear my grandpa�s glasses� presents a totally dodgy sound, which might be a little oldschool and even a little irritating � just like some fashion items you encounter on today�s big city streets. �no fog is no solution� is a tight song that definitely needs some good fog and a harsh strobe. and finally, the last track sounds like a futuristic fairy tale from outer space looking on the world as if it is a �society bathysphere�.

fouk might have been curating outplay since 2013, but their butterfunk ep is in fact the duos first proper ep on their own imprint. its not that theyve been resting on their laurels: they ve drip-fed a handful of eps on the likes of heist and house of disco over the past few years, and released solo efforts on kolour ltd and razor n tape that stormed the charts. it s been fascinating to see the dutch pair slowly break the mould, moving from heavy sampling in favour to an emphasis on original instrumentation and production. the butterfunk ep is fine showcase of their prowess in the studio, loaded to the hilt with contemporary dancefloor funk. things kick off with the rolling drums, off-beat percussion and seriously infectious hammond lines of organ freeman. title track butterfunk is aimed squarely at the hips with its smooth keys and perfectly placed vocal, while some acid lines give the track a little edge. flip over for the bumping wong way, a chunky workout with a rubber bassline. the finale of the ep is winter, a fantastic slice of 80s inspired downtempo mushroom jazz.

�utopia� is the ninth studio album from the iconic artist björk, out november 24th via one little indian records. the album s artwork was created in collaboration of m/m, jesse kanda and james merry and reflects the records sonic direction, optimism, lightness, utopia. of the album she explained to dazed this summer that, ��maybe that�s why it became a utopian theme � if we�re gonna survive not only my personal drama but also the sort of situation the world is in today, we�ve got to come up with a new plan, if we don�t have the dream, we�re just not gonna change. especially now, this kind of dream is an emergency.� björk wrote, produced and recorded the album between reykjavik and new york, working closely with arca and writing for, conducting and recruiting a thirteen piece flute orchestra which will be on the road with her next year.

nena�s �feuer und flamme� (german for �fire and flame�, with the additional figurative meaning of �great enthusiasm�) was released in 1985. it�s the third album by german pop band nena and the fourth studio album of its singer, gabriele �nena� kerner. the album was a success, reaching no. 2 in germany.
prompted by the success of �99 luftballons� (1984), which included english-language versions of songs from the band�s first two albums, nena recreated �feuer und flamme� in english as �it�s all in the game� (1985), with lyrics by canadian singer lisa dalbello. the experiment failed commercially and was not repeated with the band�s next album. gabriele kerner recorded a new bilingual german-english version of �anyplace, anywhere, anytime� with kim wilde in 2002.

nena (1983) is the first album by german pop rock band nena and the second studio album of its singer, gabriele -nena- kerner. the album was a great success in west germany and the second single -99 luftballons- � a fable of nuclear war brought about by a bunch of balloons in the sky being mistaken on radar for a pre-emptive missile attack- successfully reached #1 in the music charts in the u.s. and worldwide.
the first nena album was released as part of the music genre called neue deutsche welle, new german wave movement in the german music. all five members of the band contributed to the songwriting. they were a unique group of musicians with a strong intuitive grasp of both classic pop and rock formulas. nena insisted that she saw herself as a member of the band and not as their leader.
the album is still regarded as an unsurpassed classic of german pop history, although most later nena albums are not far behind in quality.

following a run of local transmissions from a sagittariun, crump, rob smith and atki2, idle hands turns its attention to berlin and the straight-up, no-nonsense techno thrust of johanna knutsson and hans berg. both respected artists and djs in their own right, the pair have been turning out 12inches together for the free spirit society, klasse and crime city disco over the past few years, but most importantly they ve been steering the excellent ufo station recordings as a vessel for their punchy, primal techno tracks. the sound on this ep taps into the pure form of stern, dark dancefloor tackle favoured at idle hands � no extraneous filler, plenty of space in the mix, but equally built with warmth and personality rather than monochrome functionality. if you need further proof, just look to the fact the ep is named after a swedish soap opera from the 90s. the bleeps and bass tones that pulse through -taggen- are so finely crafted they need not skip and dance around the arrangement. the melodic interplay on -klimax- is subtle but ultimately uplifting and optimistic where so much techno concerns itself with oppressive gloom. -bimbo- finds the pair embracing a more psychedelic approach, but even here the modulating effects processes are kept within certain boundaries so as to not dilute the impact on the floor. after all, this is music to dance to, to be felt over a large system (where possible). moving from leftfield bass excursions to minimalist 2-step, uk techno and now onto this much more continental sound, themälarviken ep continues to widen the range of idle hands musical tastes without losing sight of the complete picture.

increasing access to new studio technology resulted in this splicing of dub reggae dna with cut-and-paste sampledelia. anticipating the later work of labels such as def jux, wordsound and anticon, this 1985 album paired crack jamaican session musicians such as the roots radics� drummer style scott (by this point the instrumental leader of dub syndicate) and the congos� ashanti roy with public image limited�s jah wobble and keith levene, not to mention the restless mixing desk boundary-pushing of producer and de facto member adrian sherwood. a more reggaefied take on the industrial funk sherwood was making with tackhead during the same period, lovers of digidub, outernational sounds and even the wilder reaches of 80s hip-hop will find much to get lost in here

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, �god made the sea and sun,� was not promoted properly, though �everyday wondering,� for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, �golden snake� for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson�s �you really got a hold on me� for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark �none shall escape the judgement� (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the �flying cymbal� craze. clarke�s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

in 2012 bottin presented a mysterious neo-italo-wave band: cristalli liquidi. this album, finally, unveils the mystery: cristalli liquidi is not a band, not in the conventional sense of the word. it s entirely bottin s music, lyrics and vocals, with a little help from his friends. this long overdue lp not only introduces original works, but also breathes new life into remakes of obscure italian pop songs. sun-blushed synthwork is embraced by vocals steeped in romance, vocals en italiano no less. the many guises of the glitterball are unveiled, from the deep bass and smooth funk of 70s disco into the catchy hooks of the 80s and beyond to darker tones and lovelorn laments. across nine tracks the venetian takes you on a journey, as his homeland of italy is musically explored through past and present. cristalli liquidi is an album some five years in the making, five years at first glance. in reality, this lp is a narrative that spans almost thirty-five years. from the poets and songwriters who inspired bottin to the friendships and collaborations that made this project possible, this is an album forged through memories old and new, a heartfelt account of relationships between people (and synthesizers too!)

when wph boss red d heard toriton being played by ken ishii during a wph radio takeover on belgiums studio brussel radio station he ran to the booth and knew this track had wph written all over it. not abiding to any trends, just devastatingly beautiful house music. some licence negotiations and months later satoshi fumi agreed and made lalalalaland, a brand new track to go along with toriton and make up this ep the title track has that unmistakable detroit feel that takes you from melancholy to euphoria and back, while lalalalaland has been described by people hearing it in red ds sets this summer as japanese sunset trance or end of the night eyes closed hands in the air stuff. whatever the words, its the music that counts and satoshi fumi takes his place among the wph family in style!

potentially the love child of old dirty bastard and madlib..kenlo is an enigma not known to many, but soon to be a household alongside legends. already at the forefront of the long running montreal rap and beat scene with his alaclair crew, his wheeels ep charts into broken boogie funk territory for hot shotters worldwide! reminiscent of sa-ra outtakes but in a different looser direction, winter phonque starts of the ep full swinging and ready to knock out any sucker ducks who get in the way of the bboy circle! sur la rivere is a cheeky number to get any dance floor open and then the whole package is rounded off with future house vibes of woogie on! certified classic!

before run dmc�s collaboration with aerosmith -walk this way- (1986) smashed the hit charts and proved to the mainstream that rock and hip hop are mere sides of the same coin, the seminal hip hop group already introduced both styles to each other on their second album king of rock (1985).
this groundbreaking record was the first hip hop album to go platinum. as its title implies, the dynamic trio claim their supremacy by combining heavy 808 beats and massive guitar riff samples, proving they were the baddest group on the block, period. their sound influenced late eighties hip hop on the whole, most notoriously by their label mates the beastie boys. king of rock s influence is phenomenal. not only did it introduce rock fans to a new music, its fresh sounds also made all hip hop that came before it sound dated. this 1985 record is a trailblazing album to the umpteenth degree!
